I’m looking for health insurance that will be affordable (read under $100 a month) and have fairly decent coverage.
Also I would very much like coverage that will start very soon after applying, the sooner the better.
Any one have any suggestions?

The Best Cheap Policy -
Ultimately, you are the one who determines what is the best insurance because you decide what the right balance is between affordability and policy benefits.
If you choose a plan that covers everything i.e. doctors office visits, prescription drugs, preventative health benefits, maternity coverage as well as opting for low deductibles, low copays as well as vision and dental benefits your monthly premiums will be significant.
On the other hand if you are young, healthy and rarely use the health care system you could consider a plan that covers only the major health catastrophe. This approach will result in a relatively low monthly premium. You then can use the monthly premium savings to pay for the occasional doctor visit and still come out ahead.
Based on what you are asking I would suggest that you need a trusted adviser to help you through the process of purchasing health insurance so that you understand what you are purchasing. Check with the agent that writes your home or auto insurance he/she can provide you a health insurance proposal that takes into account your budget and health status. He or she can answer questions as to what is and is not covered by the policy, explain deductibles and copays and show you the hospitals and doctors that participate in the network.
Some are going to suggest you go to their site so that they earn a few pennies on a “click through”. Some are going to suggest going on line to get a quote but you probably already know that there is much more to health insurance than price. Some might even suggest a discount plan as the “best and cheapest” approach but that is not insurance at all.
Do yourself a favor, use the Internet to research health insurance but use an agent to purchase the coverage.
Tom Z is correct, a helpful insurance agent can guide you through the process. Finding one that has your best interest at heart can be a challenge, but well worth the search. It is critical to find an INDEPENDENT insurance agent, and not one tied just to one agency, as an independent agent will shop around for the best policy, and not one that is tied to his particular insurance company.
Unlike some of the feedback here, I believe one of the best ways is to use a general insurance finder link for quotes. You will receive callbacks from at least 4 or 5 agents. Of those choices you will no doubt find someone that is courteous and helpful.
Finding coverage for $100 a month that has low deductibles may not be realistic. In fact, it may be more cost-effective to look into a higher deductible plan if you are healthy. You can put away the difference you would have paid on your premium into an HSA or personal savings where the money works for you.
Most insurance policies have a three-month probationary period where the insurance company is watching to see how you use your policy. If you have any major work done during that time, you risk your policy being terminated, or having your rates raised significantly.
In order to get the lowest price on your insurance premium as possible, you will need to have a careful plan of how you will use your policy. Keep in mind – the more you run through insurance, the higher your rates will be, both now and in the future. If you choose personal insurance, the company WILL keep track of your health history, and this history can and will be shared with other carriers should you ever decide to switch insurance carriers. Best wishes to you.
The State of Vermont’s Catamount health insurance can be much cheaper than for-profit insurance. You can call the phone number but they won’t tell you how much your premium will be. Fill out the 8-page application and send it in.
Health insurance can be very tricky. Since I’m from North Dakota I’m not sure about Vermont laws and regulations, so I recommend you call a local health insurance agent. http://www.americaschoicetoday.com/Health-Insurance.html They should be able to help you.
